Sawantwadi
Till 1850
Sawantwadi was known as Sunderwadi
(Sundar-Beautiful, Wadi-Locality). It was the former capital of the last Kingdom
Of Sawantwadi during the pre-independence era. The name Sawantwadi came
into the practice because of surname of the ruling family of Khem-Sawants. In
1947, it was merged with the Independent Republic of India. Sawantwadi City is famous for its arts and
culture. It is especially known for its wooden crafts.
Amboli, the
only hill station in Kokan region, is in Sawantwadi taluka.
Sawantwadi Palace –
Sawantwadi
is known as heritage city due to its old wada type houses & the palace.
Earlier the palace was placed at the top of the Narendra hill. Khemsawant III
constructed the existing palace in late 18th century. The famous Moti Lake,
built in front of the palace in 1874, has added to its beauty.
Moti Lake –
Moti means
pearl. Enchanting landscape is formed by the pleasing green hills all around
this pearl of the Sawantwadi town. Boating can be enjoyed here. One can enjoy a delightful moment here after
sunset. As the sun sets, streetlights are switched on at once around the
complete periphery of the lake.
Shilpgram –
Sawantwadi
is well known for its wooden toys. Wooden models of fruits and vegetables are
famous worldwide. It is famous for wooden toys, handicraft of Bamboo, clay
& wood.
Narendra Hills and Narendra Van Udyan –
The garden
is situated on the top of the Narendra hill which is very famous for the
variety of flora and fauna here.
Amboli –
Amboli
village is well known as ‘Mahabaleshwar' of Sindhudurg. It is 30kms away from the Sawantwadi. Amboli
was declared as a hill station in 1880 by the Briitsh Govt. which is situated
at an altitude of approx.690m. It is the wettest place in Sindhudurg and
receives highest rainfall during rainy season. Amboli is blessed with thick
forests, tree canopied hills, cool and refreshing climate. It is a classic
holiday destination but at the same time it is an ecofriendly hill station. So
care should be taken by everybody while roaming in Amboli.
There are
numerous view points, you can enjoy in Amboli.
Hiranyakeshi
Point –
It is a
starting point of the river Hiranyakeshi. It originates in a cave, where there
is a temple of Goddess Parvati. There is a small temple and a lateritic cave
which is just 4 feet in diameter at the origin. There is an evergreen forest
nearby.
Nangartaas Waterfall –
It falls
into a narrow ravine making deep and mysterious sound. This noise makes one
aware that there is a fall just 10 ft aside of the road.
A concrete bridge has been constructed over it so that tourists can get improved and securer sight of that ravine. The falls is small but worth watching.

Kavalesaad Echo Point –
This is the
point of Amboli from where you can see the beautiful range of high hills, thick
forest & the most beautiful sunset. It is said that if you make a noise
here, you will get the reply 7 times. Due to this nature's echo system, it is
also known as Kavalesaat. This point offers bird’s eye view of picturesque
terrains below.
Sunset Point –
In the
evening sunset turns horizon into shades of orange, red and pink before being
extinguished into deep blue waters of Arabian sea.
